The Sacral Chakra

In this episode we dive into the sacral chakra, known to be the centre of emotions, feelings and pleasure.

Our guest this month is Hackney-based Giorgia C. Bertoni, a psychodynamic counsellor and psychotherapist who specialises in sexual intimacy.

What are its main attributes?

Svadhisthana (sacral chakra) is the second of the seven chakras, located just below the navel. Common characteristics of the root chakra are: Emotions, feelings, relationships, sensual pleasure, fantasies, warmth, and intimacy.

Sexual wellbeing

Giorgia is a qualified MBACP Psychodynamic Counsellor and Psychotherapist working in Hackney, London. She primarily deals with issues related to sexuality, intimacy and Gender, Sexual & Relationship Diversity (GSRD).

This includes a LGBTQIA+ positive approach, polyamory and other forms of non-monogamy. Basically, everything outside hetero-normality. Her specialisation stemmed from herself being a queer woman who wasn’t always comfortable with what sex and relationships were supposed to be like.

When asking her for her primary advise to those who might struggle with their own sexuality, in whichever form that may manifest, she said:

“The best that we can do is seeking out connection. It is the core of our own primary needs as human beings. Because when you feel isolated, you start thinking you’re the only one with this problem or experience. When however, people are able to find resources and information that helps them, it has the ability to diminish those feelings of isolation.”

So much sex is performance driven and/or disembodied, like looking or behaving in a certain way. Often it becomes a show to impress others or to make ourselves feel validated.

To shift away from that behaviour and relationship with ourselves into a more embodied one, Giorgia gave us some great advice.

How can I get in touch with my own sexuality?

  • Slow down & focus on what’s happening and what you’re feeling.

  • Move away from the rationale that something needs to be achieved (i.e. orgasming).

  • Bring the fun back in by playing and exploring the whole body, not just the erogenous areas. You might find out something that surprises you!

  • Touch yourself how you would touch someone else and take your sweet time.

  • Getting in touch with your eroticism also in different areas of your life i.e. when eating food, will heighten the overall awareness of sensations and directly impact your relationship with sexuality over time.
